Message from the Video Director

I have been working in the video production industry for a few decades. I have never thought of transferring a stage performance to a movie on screen. Every live performance is unique and humanising in my mind. Whereas for recording movies or videos, stories are told through the camera. This involves a careful justification of the camera angles, cinematic language, and film-making techniques. This is very different from a live performance. Showing movie/ video is not restricted by time and venue. Hence, more people would be able to watch the performance and widely spread the word about it.

Connecting the real and virtual worlds is a trend. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, movie/ video recording seems to be more suitable to allow audiences to enjoy watching different shows in a safe manner.

Previously, I helped a Hong Kong professional drama production to record its drama on stage. I took a different approach than other production companies. I not only recorded the performance on stage, but also captured it in a style of a movie so that I was able to display the feelings and emotions in a more delicate way. With the support and trust of the drama production team, the live broadcast was well-received and the audiences were touched by the performance.

I have directed children’s shows before, so I love filming with children. I am honoured to be invited CCC Kei Wan Primary School (Aldrich Bay) to direct and film their English musical, ‘In His Eyes’. During the filming process, I had high demands of the student actors and crew members. I hope the performance of every student actor can be recognised because I believe each of them played an important role in the musical. As a parent of three daughters, I completely understand that parents would like to see their children’s performances. That’s why I have made good use of the cinematic language so that I can present the best version of the musical on screen. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Principal, teachers, crew on set and behind the scenes for their trusts and cooperation. Also, a big thanks goes to all the student actors. I am moved by their efforts and appreciate how seriously they took the performance. I hope the audience in the theatre could share the same warmth and touching feeling from the musical.

                                                                          Mr Ho Siubo
